Teaching

  • SOC 160: Human Sexuality

In this course, students are introduced to the diversity of sex and sexuality, with a focus on the contemporary United States. We study sexuality through a social scientific lens as a multi-faceted social construct that has a range of material and psychological effects on the everyday lived experiences of individuals and groups. Course topics include, but are not limited to, the development of sexuality as a concept and focus of "scientific study," people's physical, psychological, and social experiences of sex, and social, cultural, and legal norms regarding sexual expression and interaction

  • SOC 200: LGBTQ+ Studies

A multidisciplinary introduction to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer+ (LGBTQ+) studies, including theories of identity formation, different societal interaction with LGBTQ+ communities, LGBTQ+ cultures in history, and contemporary legal and political issues. Course materials explore the intersections between LGBTQ+ identities and other socially marginalized identities, including (but not limited to) those based on race, ethnicity, religion and disability.

  • SOC 138: Sociology of Gender

Gender is everywhere. We build our lives, our institutions, and our relationships on our ideas about gender, often without noticing it at all; it feels like gender is part of the “natural” or “normal” way life works. In this class, we set out to denaturalize these ideas. We will talk about where gender comes from and how we learn it, how we perform gender and how we police how others perform gender, and how gender structures our society from the interpersonal to the structural level. We investigate how misogyny and transphobia are evolving today, as well as discuss resistance to gender norms and the future of gender politics.

“She is very helpful and seemed exited to help so it was less intimidating to ask for help.”

“Fostered a safe space to talk about sensitive topics”

“Chloe was extremely helpful, welcoming and enthusiastic when teaching our class. She created a welcoming and inclusive environment and allowed all students to have a chance to be heard. I felt that her lessons were structured well and reflective of the main points we read and they adequately prepared us for the quizzes. Throughout the semester she asked for feedback from students to make her teaching effective (how's everyone's energy level today, do we like breaking up into small groups or doing whole class discussions etc. and would adjust based on that feedback. Chloe was not only a good, responsive TA but also a delightful person and I would definitely take a class with her again.”

“I like how Chloe led the discussions. If no one was speaking up, she would wait until someone was comfortable to say something. And every single time, waiting for someone to speak would lead to a good, meaningful discussion, rather than picking someone at random to get things started.”

“Chloe is the best TA l've ever had. Cabell [lecturer for SOC 200] and Chloe work together so well that they make the classroom an impossible place to be bored in. Chloe was such a great TA for Psych 160: Human Sexuality during my first semester that I switched my whole schedule around this semester in order to have her as a TA for this course. She leads the classroom with grace and relatability; she constantly makes all of us want to contribute and learn something new. She makes discussion a fun place to be and always validates our opinions/ideas, I will miss her next semester.”
